Craft your own unique dual-layer strings from the 208 individual sets of meticulously sampled machine. Those include a selection of strings from the ARP Omni, ARP Quartet, Crumar Trilogy, Elka Rhapsody, Eminent 310, Korg Lambda, Logan String Melody, Moog Opus 3, Solina, Roland RS-202 and RS-505 to name a few.

The VSM is an intuitive but highly powerful Virtual String Machine which affords the user many of the sounds from this genre of instrument, and contains a wealth of sounds from a small mountain of classic and rare string machines. These range from the first commercial string ensembles (Eminent 310 & Freeman String Symphonizer) through to the highly lauded Solina, Elka Rhapsody, Logan String Melody, Korg PE2000 and many more.

The plugin which inspired me to make this list is The deputy Mark II by Full Bucket Music. It was released quite recently, but quickly became my favorite freeware string machine VST plugin, due to its great sound and brilliant control layout.

Cheeze Machine is the only plugin from the list which is also available for Mac users. It is a very capable virtual string machine, featuring a chorus ensemble emulator, a 6-stage phaser, and a handy reverb unit.

VSM's simple and intuitive MIDI editing in action.The Ensemble section adds thickness and movement that sounds similar to the multi-voice bucket-brigade chorus typical of old string machines, offering a choice of two, four, six or eight chorus voices. This effect presents a wide stereo soundfield, due to each voice having its own fixed pan setting. The ensemble voices are freely mixable with the dry sound, and can also be detuned against each other, providing anything from subtle chorusing to heavy mal de mer.

At the furthest end of the scale were more luxurious, expensive models that blurred the distinction between string machine and synthesizer, such as the Korg Trident and Crumar Trilogy, offering features such as additional waveforms, a separate bass section, a tacked-on polysynth with filter and ADSR envelope shaper, and maybe even a basic organ section; these are known as multi keyboards. Yet another subset of string synths is the paraphonic ensembles. The distinctive feature of paraphonics is that, rather than each note having independent attack and release envelopes, just one EG operates upon the whole sound, lending them a distinctive 'sucking' quality when played non-legato. Examples of paraphonic ensembles include the Solina, the Logan Piano Strings Synthesizer and the ARP Omnis. It's undoubtedly a testimony to the quality of the Solina's sound that it came to be revered as the 'Rolls Royce' of string machines, despite being paraphonic.

The effects (phaser and ensemble) and output sections are both global parameters and modify the combined sound of both layers. The ensemble effect is typical of the string machine genre, adding width and thickness to the sound, while the phaser includes two modes - six- and 12-stage - and can be synced to the host tempo.
