Always ask around to see whether anyone you know would like the furniture you no longer want. You might be surprised. Even if you think your furniture is past it or totally out of date, your friends or family may not agree. In particular, if you know anyone buying their first home, or renting their first flat, they could well be desperate for freebies and more than happy to take it off your hands.

The Best Tips To Get The Furniture You Really Want

If the furniture you want to get rid of is completely unsuitable to being reused, then the next best option is recycling. Furniture at the end of its useful life can often be recycled, especially items made from wood and metal. Some items can be more tricky though. For example, according to the National Bed Federation (NBF), only about 19 per cent of mattresses are recycled. This is because the springs in most mattresses can seriously damage machines (another reason to get yours cleaned up and reused instead). If you want to recycle furniture the best place to start is your local recycling centre.

One of the most important things to consider when choosing furniture is the material. You want to avoid microsuede as well as velvet because they attract pet hair and will transfer the hair to your clothes. Look for durable fabrics that are thick. Some of the best materials will be crypton or sturdy leather.

The next element you are going to want to look at is the pattern. Small blocks of patterns will hide any dirt or hair that is on the furniture. If you do not like patterns, simply choose a dark color such as black or dark brown.

Our final tip for furniture shopping is to make sure that you can machine wash parts of it. It can be really nice if the cushions come off and you are able to wash them. Other people use slipcovers to keep their furniture clean and nice looking. You will simply want to make sure that a slip cover would look good.

Most furniture you refinish will fall into one of two categories. If you are painting a family heirloom, you want to get it the best finish possible to protect it for many years to come as a treasured furniture piece.

The traditional Proclassic water-based paint even beat out the Proclassic hybrid product making it the best Sherwin Williams paint for furniture. See more info about furniture paint types below. SEE REVIEW

For a high-gloss furniture paint, you want a hybrid formula because it has the benefits of oil-based paints without the negatives. The best hybrid paint and best paint overall is Benjamin Moore Advance. SEE REVIEW *If you are painting a smaller furniture piece with lots of spindles (like a chair or small stool), go with a gloss spray paint to avoid drips.

Here is all the data from the furniture paint testing. Be sure to check out the video to see exactly how I tested to find the best paint for furniture. If you have trouble seeing it, you can find it here as well: The Best Furniture Paint, YouTube Video

When I tested the best clear coats for furniture, I put a cold drinking glass on different surfaces to see which clear coats would leave a ring. I did the same test with furniture paints and to my surprise, they all of them did really well. No painted surface of any paint brand bubbled up after having a cold glass on the surface for 48 hours!

Some pieces of furniture will endure more traffic than others. Wooden chairs, dining room tables and other flat surfaces are probably subjected to more wear and tear than any other furniture pieces. For that reason, you want a really durable paint brand for heavy use surfaces. I recommend Benjamin Moore Advance as the best paint for chairs and tables because it is so durable but also leaves a gorgeous finish. For my best tips on painting chair spindles and table legs, check this post: How To Paint Table Legs Quickly and Easily

If you are looking for the best paint for furniture without sanding you can use any of the paints above but just make sure you use a good deglosser before you prime to get good results. I will be doing a post on this soon but in the meantime, I recommend this deglosser: Liquid Sander (Click here for the current price.)

If you want to find the best paint for a dresser any of the above paints in the top categories would be great. For high-use furniture pieces, you can use the top coat I mention above for extra durability (see my favorite top coat here). Different colors of paint cover differently. For example, it can be hard to get coverage with really light and ironically really dark colors. To see how to paint a dresser a dark color, check out these tips: Tips for Painting Furniture in Dark Colors

The best paint for laminate furniture is Benjamin Moore Advance as it tested to be the best paint on wooden and laminate surfaces like IKEA furniture. Be sure to use a thick coat of primer on laminate pieces and sand the laminate really well in order to scuff it up. You can see how I do that here: How to Paint Laminate IKEA Furniture

No one really likes to dust, but the chore is one of the best ways to take care of your furniture. Airborne particles can build a filmy layer on wood that scratches the surface. Frequent dusting keeps this buildup from happening. Always use soft cloth like cotton T-shirts, cloth diapers or microfiber to avoid damage. Lambswool dusters are great for ornate carvings or hard to reach places because they effectively attract and hold dust.

I love making wood furniture on my own recently. But I am lacking on how should I take care of them. This tips would help me a lot. This is a great helpful tips for beginners like me. Thanks for sharing this article and I learned something new.

I have a Californian Bungalow house with beautiful walnut coloured doors, window frames, picture rails & skirting boards. In my bedroom I have a dark wooden bed and matching dark furniture. I now want to purchase a built-in wardrobe and I am really worried about having a dark wooden one. Although it will match what is there, I am really worried that it will make the small bedroom look too dark. I actually want a white wardrobe, but my concern is that it will clash with all the dark wood. My husband thinks that a white wardrobe will look completely out of place and he is usually good at visualizing things in advance (I like us to be in agreement).
